Marshall Allen & the Arkestra Celebrate Marshall’s 100th Birthday, Roulette, Brooklyn, Jun 23, 2024

Live painting and video projections performed live during a set by Marshall Allen and the Sun Ra Arkestra in celebration of Marshall Allen's 100th birthday, performed Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Roulette, Brooklyn, NY, as part of Vision Festival 2024. Projections are output through a Roland mixer, with one channel dedicated to real-time digital painting created using a Wacom tablet and Corel Painter, mixed with a second channel displaying custom video and animation loops. The combination results in a unique display that interacts with the tempo, movement, and energy of the performers, and to a lesser extent the audience. In a time where video and VJ projections are often integrated into stage performances, this practice offers a unique twist, having developed organically over more than a decade of collaborative performances with improvising musicians, dancers and writers in the greater NYC jazz, free jazz, and new music scenes.
